PROTECTIVE RELAYS window installation by AARON MURPHY July 10th to August 9th, 2020, all hours. Watch the artist install the work: Friday July 10th after 5pm/ Saturday July 11th after 10am/ Sunday July 12th after 10am Protective Relays is an installation comprised of two cameras aimed at two different photographs and a televsion on which the images have been combined to create a digitized montage. Each camera is controlled by a micro-computer that relays video data through a closed network to a third computer that amalgamates the feeds for the television screen. Because the cameras are “live”, the montage on the television flutters and vibrates when their attached sensors and computers attempt to compensate for changes in the surrounding light caused by time of day and passing shadows.

More than ever, we flock together, sharing an on-line culture shaped by Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, YouTube, Instagram, Reddit, Tumblr, TikTok and more. The result? Flamboyant self-absorption. Like a flurry of birds — the ultimate social network. Every one revelling in his or her unique plumage. Each demanding to be seen and heard — undisciplined, exuberant, delightfully chaotic. Kim Papp

I intend to create a visual tension between forms that suggests the comfort of shelter or food, and a content that represents remnants of humankind’s intervention against nature…imagery references species that are listed as extinct, extirpated, endangered, threatened or vulnerable in Canada. Pottery is said to be the most common find at archaeological sites…shards of my pots may well endure the next great extinction. Ingrid Mayrhofer

Are You Pleased With That? Like a silkworm cocoon, this delicate container was made using a woven thread. The piece is vibrant, sensual and suggestive. I had just given birth to my first child and needed stitches. As the male gynecologist was stitching me up, he asked my husband the question, “Are you pleased with that?” Years later this memory came back to me while sewing together the red fibres on this piece. I wondered how a woman’s intimate parts can be seen to become an object, separated from her feelings and who she is as a whole. Handling this piece requires a gentle touch, the way a woman deserves to be held. Perhaps this work has become a container for my painful experience – and a gift for all women who have been objectified.

BRIAN D. JOHNSTON : The Poser Project FLAGSHIP GALLERY ARTISTS : Songs of Ascent April 14 – May 7, 2017

Brian Johnston (Guelph) finds the sets for his “selfies” in abandoned rural houses and creates tableau vivants that reflect the questioning nature of his Christian faith. Flagship Gallery is a faith-based artists gallery on James N. In this exhibition: Chris Cuthill, Heidi Brannon, Ann Balch, Tarajoy Knibbe, James Tughan, Amanda Leblanc, George Langbroek. … (Easter) has everything to do with the resurrection of Jesus, whom we regard as the Original Artist ,,. which has been proven to be historical fact for creative renewal in the lives of millions. In our view songs of lament can become, truthfully, Songs of Ascent.

RENE PRICE CROSSSHOP Oct 13 – Nov 5, 2017

  • Who needs an artist statement?
  • Why did I make this Crossart for the Crossshop?
  • Does this lapsed RC have a cross to bear?
  • Did I want to hurt, in making this art?
  • Is it OK to just let ideas out like diarrhea?
  • Shouldn’t we just all make happy art?
  • How many variations on the cross can I make?
  • Is this satire, simply puerile, juvenile play?
  • Can’t one make art about politics or religion?
  • Why didn’t I make art about Islam too?
  • Over whose couch could this stuff possibly hang?
  • Why am I asking all these smart ass questions?
  • Is the cross an early logo for the God brand?
  • Will I go to hell for making this shock value art?
  • Can one design a better cross, like a better widget?
  • Why not just leave well enough alone?
  • Am I the only one who thinks this is (great) art?
  • Will Bryce go to hell for letting me show this art?
  • Does God even know what this is all about?
  • Did you actually read this far?

PATRICK CARSON CUBAN WOMEN BEHIND THE FACADE June 10 – July 3, 2016.

After recovering from a serious car accident, he returned to university to study Fine Art in 1995. He graduated with a BFA from Kelowna UBC in 2000, and began a continuing project of travelling and painting portraits in Korea, Japan, Thailand, Burma, and most extensively in Cuba. His process of hiring “agents” to find temporary studio spaces and to secure sitters has lead him into unpredictable and precarious situations. This recent selection of Cuban paintings was painted on location in various areas of Havana between 2012 and 2016. Each painting is a rich statement about the resilience and beauty of the Cuban people.
