In 1967, Jim Chambers was working as a steel company draughtsman and making photographs in his parents’ basement on Hamilton mountain. He entered and won a Hamilton Spectator photo contest, and subsequently the same photograph (“The Best Man”) won second prize and $4,000 in the National Geographic’ National Snap-shot Contest. He quit his job, bought a colour TV for his parents, new Nikon camera equipment, and sucessfully applied to McMaster University as a mature student. He worked at the Royal Ontario Museum, Art Gallery of Ontario and taught at Humber College. He was a founding member of Toronto Photographers Workshop (TPW) and co-director, with Colleen O’Reilly, of James North Artists Collective.
A CONVERSATION Doug Carter, Jon Cleland & Jim Mullin June 22- July 28, 2024. Opening Reception Saturday June 22, 2024 @ 7 PM, Birthday party for Jim Mullin, Sat. July 27, 1-4 pm.
Jim often said that he’d like to exhibit with Doug and Jon, whom he admired as artists, but the actual impetus was rooted in the twenty year gap between their ages, which inevitably informs their influences and practice. He’d already collaborated with Doug on a series of large scale found object works, and this kind of creative conversation continued many years later, while spray painting on urban rooftop walls with Jon.
I was totally amazed, slightly trepidatious and so grateful when these two artists, who had never met, accepted an invitation to collaborate on 3 paintings with their late friend. This exhibition marks Jim’s 60th birthday on July 27th, 2024.

MELISSA NEILFLICKERING LIGHTS Feb 9 – March 17 2024 Flickering Lights is a series of paintings made in response to twilight, tidal bores, night skies, satellites, and electrical garden lighting. I began the early stages research and image gathering of this work in 2022 when I knew I was interested in creating a series of work based on night skies. I was specifically interested in the cosmos after reading Jo Marchant’s book: The Human Cosmos: Civilization and the Stars (In this non-fiction book the author outlines the connections humans have made throughout history to their place in the universe in response to stars, constellations and the awe of the night sky).
