JIM CHAMBERS / Face & Place

JIM CHAMBERS Face & Place Sept 13 – Nov 10, 2024

In 1967, Jim Chambers was working as a steel company draughtsman and making photographs in his parents’ basement on Hamilton mountain. He entered and won a Hamilton Spectator photo contest, and subsequently the same photograph (“The Best Man”) won second prize and $4,000 in the National Geographic’ National Snap-shot Contest. He quit his job, bought a colour TV for his parents, new Nikon camera equipment, and sucessfully applied to McMaster University as a mature student. He worked at the Royal Ontario Museum, Art Gallery of Ontario and taught at Humber College. He was a founding member of Toronto Photographers Workshop (TPW), and co-director, with Colleen O’Reilly, of James North Artists Collective.

Inspiring and a reminder that small moments can change everything. Keep taking photos and capturing humanity in all its iterations.” L.M.
